Medical writing is one of the most common moves for people with a science degree who want to leave the lab or clinic. The work is varied, often remote, and in steady demand.
Know the two main paths
Regulatory writers produce documents for regulators, such as clinical study reports and the summaries in Module 2 of the Common Technical Document. Medical communications writers produce education and publication material for doctors.
Learn the structures
Regulatory documents follow set formats. ICH E3, for example, defines the structure of a clinical study report. Knowing these templates is a big advantage at interview.
Build a portfolio
Hiring managers want to see writing samples. Summarise a published trial, write a plain-language summary, or draft a short literature review.
Expect a writing test
Most employers set an editing or writing test. Accuracy, consistency and clear structure matter more than flair.
